MARYLAND —ย  Maryland residents like to get tipsy around the holidays. A new study said the average Marylander drinks for 5 days in a row over the holidays.

According to a study byย Addiction-Treatment.com, half of respondents said drinking over Christmas is a family tradition. Around 33% say they like to give the gift of booze to loved ones.

During the festive season, 24% said they liked to make their morning coffee even more festive with a shot of alcohol.ย

The study cautioned people that those glasses of eggnog, festive nightcaps, and cups of mulled wine can add up to overindulgence and a possible hangover.ย

Marylanders don’t drink quite as much as some parts of the country. Revelers in Washington and Idaho drink for six days in a row.

Folks in West Virginia, Louisiana, Hawaii, and New Hampshire have a more sober season. They only drink for two days in a row.

The study showed that 16% of people worry about their loved ones’ drinking over the holiday.ย

โ€œItโ€™s important that people not use the pandemic or the holidays to justify excessive drinking,โ€ said Brittney Morse, a spokesperson for Addiction-Treatment.com and a licensed advanced alcohol and drug counselor. โ€œWe know that overindulgence in alcohol can start the process for bad habits and lead to unhealthy coping skills that could ultimately result in alcohol dependence. Now is a great time to establish new, healthy traditions that are not centered around the consumption of alcohol. This ensures every family member, even those in recovery, can enjoy the holiday traditions together..โ€
