Anne Arundel County, MD — The State Fire Marshall’s Bomb Squad, working the TSA, recovered a rocket launch tube from the American Airlines baggage area at the Baltimore Washington International Airport around 5:20 a.m. this morning.
The tube did not contain any explosive materials and had been inspected by the U.S. military for safety. A U.S. Air Force sergeant, traveling on a military flight, had brought the tube home as a souvenir of serving overseas.
The Fire Marshall’s Office said the launch tube presents no immediate threat, but there is a chance it may contain pressurized gas and could not be allowed on the Sergeant’s connecting commercial flight.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal’s Bomb Squad took possession of the launch tube until it can be safely returned to the owner.
The Fire Marshall’s Office said it was the second launch tube military souvenir recovered in the past two days and reminded travelers that while it is not uncommon for military personnel to return home with momentos from their tours of duty, it is important that they are made aware of the differing regulations for their connecting commercial flights versus their military flights.
