PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County officially adopted the fiscal year 2027 budget at the scheduled meeting on Tuesday, June 9. The budget, effective July 1, 2026, totals $420 million in revenue and expenditures.
The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has been discussing the budget in meetings and at public hearings since the beginning of 2026, and formally adopted the “FY27 Capital and Operating Budget and the associated tax rates and fees” in a vote this week. The BOCC approved the budget unanimously.
The vote followed a final presentation and video overview by the county’s chief financial officer, Malena Brookshire, who outlined sources of revenue and expenses.
“This budget reflects a disciplined approach to financial planning, a continued commitment to strengthening communication and transparency, and a focus on fiscal responsibility,” county officials wrote in a budget brief.
As noted in the video, the majority of revenue, 54%, comes from county property taxes. An additional 33% comes from income taxes, with the remainder from fees, prior-year fund balance, state funding and other sources. Calvert County did not raise property tax or income tax rates for residents this year.
The biggest chunk of the budget is going toward Calvert County Public Schools. The county is committing $169 million to CCPS this year, $9 million above the state-mandated minimum county contribution.
Additionally, the FY27 budget allots $89 million to the capital budget, focusing on school construction, facility renovations and critical infrastructure improvements, as well as $12 million for water and sewage operations and $17 million for solid waste operations.

Also, funding for 6 School Resource officers — Aren’t those school resource officers paid through the Sheriff’s Office as salary or do they get an additional stipend for staying in the schools all day?
