PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County has officially joined a nationwide campaign to kick off the 250th birthday celebration of the United States of America.
Two Lights for Tomorrow commemorates the iconic midnight ride of Paul Revere on April 18-19, 1775, and calls on Americans to reflect on the country’s founding and unite in celebration and service.
The campaign draws inspiration from the two lanterns famously hung in Boston’s Old North Church — “one if by land, two if by sea” — used to alert colonial militias of the British advance. The symbolic lights served as a vital signal of resistance and coordination at the start of the Revolutionary War.
In Calvert County, two symbolic lights will shine at the Calvert County Circuit Courthouse on the evenings of April 18 and 19 to honor this moment in American history. Residents and businesses are also encouraged to participate by placing two lights or candles in their windows on those nights as a tribute to the country’s enduring fight for freedom.
Two Lights for Tomorrow is part of the broader America 250th commemoration, leading up to a nationwide celebration on July 4, 2026, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
To continue the commemoration, Maryland 250: The Old Line State and Its Role in Promoting & Preserving the American Revolution will be held Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Southern Pines Senior Center, 20 Appeal Lane in Lusby.
