PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A North Carolina man faces handgun and drug charges after Maryland State Police allegedly found a Glock pistol and suspected methamphetamine during a traffic stop in Calvert County that began with a speeding violation and developed into a DUI investigation.

Christopher Robert Sneed, 40, of Concord, North Carolina, was arrested Aug. 15 and charged with having a handgun in a vehicle, possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to District Court records.

The investigation began Aug. 15 when a Maryland State Police trooper responded to northbound Maryland Route 4 near White Sand Drive to assist another trooper with a traffic stop, according to the statement of probable cause.

Police said a trooper had stopped a 2017 BMW 750 XI with North Carolina registration after allegedly clocking the vehicle traveling 73 mph in a posted 55 mph zone.

A trooper approached the driver’s side of the BMW and identified the driver as Sneed using his North Carolina driver’s license, according to the charging documents.

While speaking with Sneed, the trooper reported detecting the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle and asked Sneed to perform standardized field sobriety tests.

Police said Sneed agreed to the tests but performed poorly, according to the statement of probable cause. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Sneed was advised of his rights and refused to take an Intoximeter test, according to the statement of probable cause.

During the investigation, a trooper reported seeing a handgun in plain view beneath the front passenger seat of the BMW.

Police identified the firearm as a Glock 19X. When questioned about the weapon, Sneed allegedly told police he did not have a permit to carry a handgun in Maryland.

The report states that police checked the firearm’s serial number through the National Crime Information Center and reported that it came back as not registered.

During a search incident to Sneed’s arrest, troopers reported discovering a bottle containing suspected methamphetamine pills in the center console of the vehicle.

The trooper identified the suspected substance as a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance based on his training, knowledge and experience, according to the statement of probable cause.

Sneed was formally charged in the District Court for Calvert County with three misdemeanors: handgun in a vehicle, possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Court records show Sneed was released after posting a $2,500 unsecured personal bond.

The case is scheduled for Sept. 21, 2026, at Calvert District Court.
