Several Calvert County neighborhoods will again participate in National Night Out. The nationwide crime prevention program sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch has been held annually since 1984. This yearโ€™s event will be held Tuesday, Aug. 7.

During their July 24 meeting, the Calvert County Commissioners presented a proclamation declaring Aug. 7 National Night Out. The proclamation was presented to representatives from the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse CAASA), the local National Night Out sponsor, Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans [R] and Maryland State Police Prince Frederick Barrack Commander Lt. Randy Stephens.

According to CAASA Coordinator Candice M. Dโ€™Agostino, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative provides some funding for the event.

Among the communities participating in the 2012 National Night Out are Chesapeake Ranch Estates, the Town of North Beach, Kenwood Beach, Dares Beach, White Sands, Long Beach and Yardley Hills.

Traditionally, local law enforcement officers attend the various community events and interact with the residents.

โ€œIt is essential that all citizens of Calvert County be aware of the importance of crime prevention programs and the impact that their participation can have on reducing crime, drugs and violence,โ€ the proclamation stated.

Commissioner Pat Nutter [R], who read and presented the proclamation, recalled the initial National Night Out events in Calvert started while he was with the sheriffโ€™s office. Nutter said last year, in his role as county commissioner, he attended โ€œfour or fiveโ€ of the community events.
