Project Name:
MD 224, Riverside Road
Location of Project:
Bridge 0801900 Over Thorne Gut And Bridge 0802000 Over Branch Thorne Gut
Description:
Rehabilitate Bridge 0801900 over Thorne Gut and Bridge 0802000 over Branch of Thorne Gut.
Scope:
The bridges on the MD 224 (Riverside Road) crossing at Thorne Gut and a Branch of Thorne Gut in Charles County are scheduled for replacement. Originally constructed in 1947, the bridges are safe for the traveling public, but are nearing the end of their useful service life. Should the deterioration continue, the bridges would need to be closed to traffic since they are already posted for reduced loads. This would impact the movement of traffic in the area since MD 224 functions as a travel route for traffic traveling along the east side of Charles County in rural areas. Replacing the bridges will save money on future maintenance spending, and support safety and mobility as a part of MDOT SHAโs bridge preservation program.
Several alternatives for maintaining traffic along MD 224 during construction were considered including maintaining traffic in a single lane with the use of a system of temporary traffic signals to alternate traffic through the work zone at the bridge while completing the bridge in two stages, and a complete detour of MD 224 traffic while completing the work in a single stage. At this time the preferred alternative will be to detour traffic during construction since it will minimize the duration of construction and its impact upon the traveling public. See the map included on this site under the maps folder.
MDOT SHA will make every effort to complete the project as quickly as possible while minimizing impacts to local residents and motorists. Construction is scheduled to begin Spring, 2018 and be completed Fall, 2018 weather permitting with the complete detour lasting approximately 10 weeks.
