As runners and walkers carried the Flame of Hope for the 2008 Special Olympics Torch Run in June, local businesses also helped hold the torch high by donating money and services to the Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office in support of the cause.

The Sheriffโ€™s Office recently presented a certificate of appreciation and plaque to the eventโ€™s largest corporate sponsor, Outback Steakhouse in La Plata, and is recognizing the many othercontributors who helped raise $17,289 for Special Olympics athletes.

Sheriff Rex Coffey and the fundraiserโ€™s coordinator, Sgt. Gus Proctor, presented the certificate and plaque to manager Flavio Ingles at Outback on Aug. 19. The plaque recognizes Outbackโ€™s generous contribution to the Torch Run; following the event, the restaurant provided chicken and steak meals to the approximately 300 participants.ย
