NORTH BEACH, Md. — Have you ever wanted to meet an astronaut? Calvert Library – Twin Beaches Branch is giving you the chance. The library invites the community to a chat with astronaut Col. Frederick D. Gregory — pilot, space pioneer and the first African American to command a space shuttle — on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Twin Beaches Branch. Registration is required.

“This is more than a talk — it’s a chance to hear firsthand from someone who’s pushed the boundaries of possibility. Whether you’re passionate about space, aviation, science or leadership, Col. Gregory’s story will leave you thinking bigger about your own future,” according to the library’s press release announcing the event.

Over the course of three missions, Col. Gregory brought his expertise and leadership to his role as an astronaut and spent his career pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. As a senior NASA leader, including service as deputy administrator, Col. Gregory helped guide the direction of U.S. space exploration from the ground, too, inspiring generations of explorers and engineers.

Col. Gregory was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and attended the United States Air Force Academy. He went on to receive a master’s degree in information systems from The George Washington University. During his time in the Air Force, he logged approximately 7,000 hours in more than 50 types of aircraft as a helicopter, fighter and test pilot and flew 550 combat rescue missions in Vietnam.

In 1978, he was selected for the first class of space shuttle astronauts. Calvert residents can hear from this highly accomplished, trailblazing astronaut in person and get inspired to push boundaries in their own lives, no matter their career path or interests.
