DUNKIRK, Md. — On Feb. 20 at approximately 12:21p.m., the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to 9900 Kirksville Ln. in Dunkirk for the odor of smoke. The volunteers arrived to find smoke showing from the basement of a split level house.
Units proceeded into the basement to find a laundry room on fire while Truck 5 took care of throwing ladders, opening up for the wagon, and venting the house. The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department arrived shortly after to assist in aiding, taking care of some additional extensions to the first floor, while other units operated in the basement.
The department posted on social media later, saying “this is a textbook example of the saying “Close Before You Doze”. This played a huge part in keeping this particular fire contained to the room of origin. Note the minimal damage to the door on the hallway side versus the fire room side.”
If we receive additional details from the State Fire Marshal, we will provide those updates.
