Tag, You’re It: Bryans Road Man Charged After Stolen Plates Found In Mechanicsville

MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A Bryans Road man was arrested after a traffic stop in Mechanicsville led Maryland State Police to recover allegedly stolen license plates and drug paraphernalia containing suspected crack cocaine residue.

Clifton Jerome Goldring, 65, of Bryans Road, was charged July 11, 2026, with possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft of less than $100.

According to charging documents, a Maryland State Police trooper observed a white Lincoln Town Car cross the left fog line three times within approximately one mile shortly after midnight July 11.

The trooper stopped the vehicle after it pulled into the 7-Eleven in the 28200 block of Three Notch Road in Mechanicsville.

Goldring was riding in the front passenger seat and allegedly extended his body from the vehicle as the trooper approached. The trooper reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol on Goldring’s breath.

A records check reportedly showed the license plates displayed on the Lincoln belonged to a 1997 Ford. A separate check of the Lincoln’s vehicle identification number found the car was unregistered, court documents state.

Goldring allegedly told the trooper the plates were stolen from a Prince George’s County junkyard but did not provide additional information.

When asked whether there was anything else inside the vehicle officers should know about, Goldring allegedly stated there was a “stem” in the car, a term commonly used for a drug-smoking device.

Goldring was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center.

He was released on a $500 unsecured personal bond July 11.

A trial is scheduled for Aug. 24, 2026, in St. Mary’s County District Court.
