Authorities Allege Woman Using Mobility Scooter Stole More Than $1,200 From Weis Over Three Months

LA PLATA, Md. — A La Plata woman is facing 17 theft-related charges after investigators alleged she repeatedly shoplifted from the same Weis Markets store over a three-month period, with the total value of the merchandise exceeding $1,200, according to court documents.

Angela Theresa Trevathan, 62, of La Plata, was charged in the District Court for Charles County with 13 counts of theft of property valued at less than $100, three counts of theft of property valued between $100 and $1,500, and one count of theft scheme involving property valued between $100 and $1,500. The charges were filed July 17, 2026, through a statement of charges application, meaning the case was initiated through the court rather than by an on-view arrest.

According to the application for statement of charges, a La Plata police officer responded to the Weis Markets at 100 Drury Drive on July 8, 2026, after store employees reported a pattern of thefts involving the same suspect.

Investigators met with the store’s loss prevention manager, who reported that an elderly woman using a mobility scooter had repeatedly entered the grocery store, selected merchandise, and left without paying. The suspect was identified as Trevathan through store records, local databases, and comparisons with photographs.

According to court documents, investigators reviewed store receipts and surveillance records documenting 16 separate incidents between April 1 and July 6, 2026. During each incident, Trevathan allegedly failed to pay for all of the merchandise in her shopping cart and bypassed all points of sale before leaving the store.

Charging documents state the alleged value of the merchandise taken during each incident ranged from $12.99 to $120.87. According to the application, the combined value of the alleged thefts totaled $1,228.88. Investigators allege the repeated incidents constituted a continuing theft scheme carried out at the same grocery store over approximately three months.

Because the case was filed by application, Trevathan is scheduled to appear for a preliminary inquiry on Aug. 31, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
