
UPDATE 8/27/2017- The Coast Guard issued the following statement regarding the search:
BALTIMORE โ The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing 40-year-old man Sunday after his boat capsized near Leesylvania State Park.
Other local agencies are still on scene searching.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region received a report from a good Samaritan stating he saw an overturned vessel with two people in the water at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday.
Sector Maryland-NCR watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small II boat crew from Coast Guard Station Washington. Maryland Natural Resources Police, Charles County Fire Department, Prince William County Fire Dept., Prince William County Police Dept., Quantico Fire Dept., and Fairfax Air Rescue also launched to search.
One of the two people in the water was able to swim to shore before authorities arrived.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, joined the search early Sunday.
โThe decision to suspend search efforts is a challenging one,” said Cmdr. Sara Wallace, chief of response at Sector Maryland-NCR. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the missing person’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Smallwood State Park, MD-8/28/2017- Maryland Natural Resource Police (NRP) are reporting a boating accident occurredย August 27, 2017, at night near Smallwood State Park.
As of 8 a.m. this morning the Maryland NRP is reporting that one man from Manassas, 40, is still missing.
