St. Maryโs College of Maryland students were recently displaced from their dormitories as a result of a mold issue that was discovered. Students were moved to hotels in the area for temporary housing while the College hired a contractor to perform mold remediation services in the dormitories. The remediation will take several months to complete and the College was eager to have the students return to the St. Maryโs campus. As a result the College rented the Sea Voyager cruise ship for use as a temporary dormitory until the mold remediation process is complete.
Upon arrival of the cruise ship the college began taking steps to move the students back to the campus and in doing so the students would need Network / Internet access. The College of Southern Maryland turned to Southern Maryland Cable, Inc (SMC) for a solution. SMC was able to quickly provide a solution that included and aerial run of a laser optimized fiber from an existing building with a network connection to the dock where the cruise ship is located. SMC technicians installed the fiber and conduit under the dock and into the Sea Voyager. The connection was made into the Sea Voyagers existing wireless and wired network which made for easy distribution. The distribution of the collegeโs network will provide wireless network access to the Internet and school resources for all the students currently residing on the vessel. This will result in the students being part of the campus and limit the distractions that were associated with the off campus living situation.
During the installation of the fiber optics SMC took extreme care not to disturb the historic and wetlands environment that encompasses St Maryโs College and Historic St. Maryโs City.
