UPDATE
Cobb Island, MD – A one-story, single-family residence on Cobb Island was accidently set on fire Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 14, state investigators reported.
According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the residence was located on Duvall Drive. Forty-seven firefighters were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze at around 1:26 p.m. and brought the flames under control in 10 minutes. There were no injuries reported.
“The accidental fire began in a bedroom as a result of the bed being ignited by a young child with an open flame,” a deputy fire marshal’s report stated. “The occupants escaped without injury. The family, three adults and five children, were displaced as a result of the fire and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.”
Additionally, the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department is conducted a clothing drive to aid the family.
The estimated loss to the house is $25,000.
According to the fire marshal’s report, the house was owned by William Mattingly and was occupied by two families.

Cobb Island, MD – On Sept. 14, the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services along with several mutual aid companies were dispatched for a single-family house fire located on Cobb Island. When units arrived they found the home filled with thick black smoke throughout. The family occupying the residence was renting from the homeowner. The family consists of three adults and five children varying in age from 3 to 14. The family lost all of their possessions in this tragic event due to damage from the smoke and fire. Luckily no one was hurt or injured from the fire.
Currently the family is looking for a new place to rent.
The Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department is reaching out to the surrounding community and businesses looking for any donations for the family. The family is in the need of clothes, shoes, household items, furniture, bedding, etc. The Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department will be the collection site for all items in new/good usable condition. Below are the clothing sizes for each family member:
Adult 1 – female pants – 14-16; shirts – large; shoes – 9 wide
Adult 2 – female shirts – 4xl-5xl shoes – 91/2 wide
Adult 3 – male pants – 36-38 shirts – x large shoes – 11
Child 1 – male pants – 30-32 shirts – large shoes – 8 men’s
Child 2 – male pants, 12-14 boys, shirts – 14-16 shoes – 5
Child 3 – male pants – 10-12 boys, shirts – 10-12, shoes – 4
Child 4 – girl pants – 7-8 shirts – 7-8 shoes – 2
Child 5 – boy pants – 3-4, shirts – 3-4 shoes – 11 child
