Southern Maryland Traffic Safety Coordinators are participating in a DriveCam pilot program.ย  This study will determine if the โ€œDriveCam for Familiesโ€ ย tool helps transition teens safely into independent driving โ€“ while still ensuring that parents know, the first time โ€“ when a familyโ€™s newest driver needs help practicing specific skills, assessing risk or making better decisions in emergency situations.ย  This in-car camera program will only capture events where excessive changes in g-forces have occurred, significant enough to lock the teenโ€™s seat belt during hard braking or swerving.ย

An open enrollment program will be held on Thursday, August 7 between 6 and 8 p.m. at 210 Main Street in Prince Frederick for parents and teens interested in participating in the program.ย  Attendees can view sample video clips, ask questions and complete all paperwork necessary for enrollment. Teens and parents should be able to complete all paperwork in less than 15 minutes. ย Parents will receive the free in-car monitoring systems in approximately a week, and will be able to schedule free installation at any area Best Buy. This will be the last open enrollment night held for Calvert County parents prior to the beginning of the school year.

There are approximately 40 free cameras remaining, and all come with free installation and a year of parental feedback on their teenโ€™s progress in developing safe driving skills and habits through DriveCamโ€™s weekly report cards and event feedback program.ย  The cameras can go into vehicles that are shared by multiple drivers.

Families that choose to participate will interact only with DriveCamโ€™s representatives, in order to ensure their teenโ€™s privacy.ย  ย ย If parents would like more information or to view sample video clips demonstrating what the camera captures, they can contact me directly beforehand at (410) 535-2200.
