LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A Lexington Park man already sentenced in connection with a 2025 Great Mills shooting was charged again after authorities reported a video surveillance recording showed an assault between two incarcerated individuals at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.
Jayshawn Maurice Bartlett, 22, of Lexington Park, was charged with second-degree assault following the June 15, 2026, incident.
According to charging documents, a deputy responded around 10:00 p.m. to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center for a reported assault that had been recorded on video surveillance.
The deputy reviewed footage of the incident, which occurred around 9:32 p.m. in a common area.
Charging documents state the victim was on the phone when Bartlett approached him from behind and wrapped his right arm over the victim’s right shoulder and his left arm under the victim’s left arm.
Bartlett then allegedly grabbed his own forearms, squeezed tightly and briefly lifted the victim off the ground before setting him back on his feet.
Charging documents state Bartlett then moved to the victim’s left side and used his right hand to grab the back of the victim’s neck, just above the shirt collar.
The victim turned toward Bartlett, and the two began arguing while standing close to each other before Bartlett walked to the other side of the room, according to charging documents.
The victim reported he was not injured and did not wish to speak with the deputy. The deputy photographed him and provided a victim’s rights pamphlet.
Court records in the new assault case show a $2,500 unsecured personal bond was posted June 16. Bartlett appears to remain in custody on a separate St. Mary’s County Circuit Court case connected to a May 2025 Great Mills shooting that left three people wounded.
In that case, court records show Bartlett pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted second-degree murder and received a total sentence of 60 years, with all but 10 years suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation.
A trial in the new assault case is set for Aug. 4 in St. Mary’s County District Court.
