New Maryland L awTo Require Speed-Limiting Devices For Reckless Drivers Beginning In 2026

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Excessive speeding is a problem across America, and now Maryland is taking action. Recently signed into law on June 3 by Gov. Wes Moore, the “Stop Super Speeders” legislation will require many high-risk drivers in Maryland to install an Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) device in their personal vehicle if their license has been suspended or revoked due to driving violations.

Using GPS technology, the ISA will prevent the car from going over a certain set speed limit, effectively curbing the driver’s ability to speed excessively on Maryland roadways.

The new law will go into effect on Oct. 1, 2026, though the deadline for the MVA to establish this program is set for Oct. 1, 2027. Drivers who require this device will have to pay for its initial installation, as well as a recurring monthly fee, which will likely act as an additional deterrent to speeding. These fees may be waived for participants who are “indigent,” according to the bill.

Nearby districts and states, such as Virginia and Washington, D.C., have already introduced similar legislation aimed at preventing avoidable car accidents that take the lives of passengers, drivers and pedestrians.

As more and more states implement Intelligent Speed Assistance for high-risk drivers, supporters say a reduction in driving violations could potentially be on the horizon, especially in places where offenders are required to pay for the technology out of their own pocket.

What Has Gov. Wes Moore Said About The Stop Super Speeders Legislation?

On June 9, Gov. Wes Moore took to X to share a short but clear message regarding his stance on dangerous drivers. He wrote, “Marylanders are tired of reckless drivers endangering others’ lives – and so am I.”

Gov. Moore wasn’t the only one to share his thoughts about the new legislation. Families for Safe Streets compiled multiple quotes from people who have lost loved ones in car accidents caused by reckless driving, highlighting how important an issue this is to many Marylanders.

Dan Langenkamp’s wife, Sarah Debbink Langenkamp, died in 2022 when she was struck by a vehicle that entered a bike lane where she was riding in Bethesda.

“No family should have to endure that kind of loss. I am grateful to Governor Moore, Delegate Allen, Senator Waldstreicher, and the Maryland legislature for acting on a solution that addresses the small number of drivers who repeatedly engage in dangerous speeding. This law will help prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy,” said Dan Langenkamp, who is a Maryland resident and Families for Safe Streets National Executive Committee member.

Stories like Dan Langenkamp’s highlight why Maryland lawmakers are cracking down on reckless driving.

The Stop Super Speeders law is intended to make Maryland roads safer while still offering a second chance for high-risk drivers.

  1. So another law that will only result in criminals, who have already proved unworthy of driving correctly, driving other vehicles illegally.

  2. That’s too far MD needs to stop forcing ALL these laws and speed traps on drivers and focus more on all the thieves and felons talk continuously allow to bond out and get generous plea deals! Priority’s are so messed up do better.

  3. So just so I understand…this law is installed in cars of people with suspended liscences. Aren’t they not supposed to drive at all? How bout a device that prevents them from being able to start a car or one that delivers a significant electrical shock when they try to start it.

  4. Another worthless money grab from a Democrat who screwed up other people’s money so all they ever know how to do is take money from others so let’s think about this a car pulls out onto the highway and because now and most of the highways they have a stoplight to get onto the merge you have to go from zero to 55 in less than a couple seconds and then on top of that pray to God that another car coming down the road at 65 70 or even 80 doesn’t slam into the back killing you or other people can’t wait to see how many lawsuits are brought from this

  5. maybe start actually pulling these dangerous idiots over and putting them in jail???? another useless solution.

  6. so the story goes on and on about speeding them uses the example of this unfortunate killing of a lady on a bike that had nothing to do with speeding – the car entered the bike lane and struck but never says if speed was a factor / this is only another mopey grab and you can bet the installers getting paid for the devices are democrat donors
