SOLOMONS, Md. — What started as a quiet morning ahead of a popular Southern Maryland parade quickly turned into an unexpected rescue when a duckling became trapped in a roadside water meter, prompting a swift response from local first responders.

On April 26, 2026, members of the Newburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department were waiting in line for the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association parade to begin when they noticed a duckling fall through a water meter lid, separating it from its nearby family.

Photos from the scene show responders using tools to carefully access the underground meter while others monitored the distressed mother duck and her remaining ducklings gathered along the curb.

Working together, the crew was able to safely retrieve the duckling from inside the meter without injury. The rescued duckling was then quickly reunited with its family, which had remained close by during the incident.

The brief but heartwarming rescue drew attention from others nearby as the situation unfolded, offering a reminder that first responders are often ready to act—no matter how big or small the emergency.

While the call did not involve flashing lights or sirens, officials say moments like these reflect the same teamwork, awareness, and dedication used during more serious incidents.

“It’s not always about the calls when serving the community,” the department shared.

The parade later proceeded as planned, but for those who witnessed the rescue, the morning’s most memorable moment had already taken place along the curbside.
