La Plata, MD – Charles County has made no secret that two of its biggest needs are economic development and a healthy business environment.

Why not throw a little incentive into the mix?

Charles County Business Development Manager for Attraction and Recruitment Debra Jones and Public Works Recycling and Litter Control Superintendent Frances Sherman gave a briefing to the Charles County Commissioners Tuesday, March 15 about plans to develop an award program that recognizes contributions of county businesses.

The awards would be presented in two different classes: Economic Development and Beautification and Community Improvements.

The Economic Development Award criteria would highlight job growth, detail high-quality job factors such as special skills or higher-than-average wages and highlight relevant new capital investment.

โ€œThis would be a business that makes an investment that has a significant impact on the community tax base,โ€ Jones said. โ€œIn areas of involvement, activity that serves as a catalyst for job growth.โ€

Sherman said the Beautification and Community Improvement Awards focused on a different aspect of the business community.

โ€œThis award would highlight businesses making meaningful contributions to the health and beauty of Charles County,โ€ she said.

Sherman added such improvements could include financial donations, landscaping, making upgrades to school yards, any number of things.

โ€œBeing good stewards of the community,โ€ she added. โ€œWe hope to inspire businesses to be involved in their communityโ€™s economic health.โ€

Economic Development Award winners would be recognized in January and February. The Beautification and Community Improvements Award winners would be acknowledged in July or August, they told the board.
