PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County residents took the first steps in choosing the officials who will serve in important public roles next year, closing out the 2026 primaries with several closely watched races decided by voters.

Notably, County Commissioners Catherine Grasso and Mike Hart each won the Republican primary for their districts. Commissioner Mark Cox lost to Kenneth B. Lee in District 2, and Todd Ireland (12.47%) and Earl “Buddy” Hance (11.44%) lost in the Republican commissioner-at-large primary race to Jason Scaggs (26.605%) and Patti Stueckler (37.81%).

Judy Pedersen (33.69%) and Antoine S. White (46.73%) won the Democratic primary for commissioner-at-large, while Ethan Cox and Michael Bennett ran uncontested in their districts.

Sheriff Ricky Cox and State’s Attorney Bob Harvey also won their uncontested primaries, while current Treasurer Amanda Dolina (64.02%) beat out Steve Weems (35.98%) on the Republican ticket.

Nationally, eyes were on Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, which encompasses Calvert County, to see who would replace longtime Congressman Steny Hoyer, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Of the 24 candidates to choose from, House of Delegates alum Adrian Boafo emerged victorious on the Democratic ticket with 33.47% of the vote. Boafo will face off against Republican Chris Chaffee in the general election.
