The Maryland State Department of Education has selected 118 high school students from across the state to receive the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship Award, an honors program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to promote academic excellence and to recognize students who show promise of continued success.ย Grants of up to $1,500 per year, for up to four years of undergraduate study, were awarded to graduating seniors.
โThese students should be commended for their dedication and hard work,โ said State Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick.ย โWe wish them much success as they continue their education endeavors.โ
With a limited pool of financial assistance available for the nationโs most able learners, the Byrd Scholarship Program provides recognition and financial support to thousands of students across the nation.ย Each year, the U.S. Department of Education asks state education departments to conduct a search for deserving candidates.ย In Maryland, principals of both public and non-public secondary schools were asked to nominate students who rank in the top 1% of their graduating class, graduated by June 30, 2007, and admitted to an institution of higher education.
โThe Byrd Scholarship recognizes Maryland students who have demonstrated a high level of achievement and academic excellence,โ Dr. Grasmick said.ย โThese recipients are model students.โ
