In this columnโ€™s infancy, I praised Clint Eastwood for his brilliant, crackerjack tour de force performance during the 2012 Republican National Convention (Ellynne en Pointe, September 19, 2012,ย Clint, We Hardly Knewย Ye). I pointed out that we had seen a master showman at work in a political theatre. Well, Mr. Eastwood, youโ€™ve got company! On the front page of October 7โ€™sย The Washington Times, Seth McLaughlinโ€™s caption under Sen. Ted Cruzโ€™s photo states that he โ€œhas become the most visible and most vocal opponent of Obamacare.โ€ In Wesley Prudenโ€™s article on the front page of theย Commentaryย section of the September 27ย The Washington Times, Mr. Pruden quotes John Podhoretz ofย The New York Postย as saying, โ€œThe Cruz performance was great political theaterโ€, referring to the Senatorโ€™s recent marathon filibuster speech.

And then Mr. Pruden goes on to say, โ€œWhat, after all, is politics about but theater? Whoever succeeded in politics but an actor?ย  Some actors are just better at it than others.โ€

With apologies to Shakespeare, โ€œAll the worldโ€™s a stage and all the politicians merely players.โ€ And with apologies to Betty Davis in the movieย All Aboutย Eve, โ€œFasten your seat belts; itโ€™s going to be a bumpy rideโ€. Weโ€™ve got eight months to go before the 2014 off-year election. And three more years of Obama as President. Stand by.
