Clint, We Hardly Knew Yeโ€ฆ

Apparently, there is no end to the criticism Clint Eastwood has endured for remarks made during his address to the Republican National Convention in Tampa earlier this month. Heโ€™s been called โ€œDotty Harryโ€ and his speech has mockingly been referred to as โ€œRomney, Eastwood and Chairโ€ โ€“ and those are some of the kinder media comments. His presentation has been ridiculed as rambling and peculiar, and – at the more extreme end of the analysis – as โ€œbizarreโ€.

In Mr. Eastwoodโ€™s defense, I must say that I found his delivery to have been brilliant. Instead of stutterings and hesitations, I saw the deliberate and skillful pacing of perfect comedic timing in his seemingly off-the-cuff remarks. And as for the substance of his speech, I found him profoundly eloquent on at least two occasions: his fervent statements – โ€œwe own this countryโ€, and โ€œwhen somebody does not do the job, weโ€™ve gotta let them goโ€ – certainly ring true. And as for the empty chair? I saw someone with imagination โ€“ with vision. We were observing a master showman at work. He is, after all, an entertainer – and an award-winning entertainer, at that. And if, as Shakespeare so famously penned inย As You Like It,ย โ€œAll the worldโ€™s a stage, And all the men and women merely playersโ€ฆโ€, then what we saw was a crackerjack tour de force performance in aย politicalย theatre. You, Mr. Eastwood, made my day.
