Clint, We Hardly Knew Ye…

Apparently, there is no end to the criticism Clint Eastwood has endured for remarks made during his address to the Republican National Convention in Tampa earlier this month. He’s been called “Dotty Harry” and his speech has mockingly been referred to as “Romney, Eastwood and Chair” – and those are some of the kinder media comments. His presentation has been ridiculed as rambling and peculiar, and – at the more extreme end of the analysis – as “bizarre”.

In Mr. Eastwood’s defense, I must say that I found his delivery to have been brilliant. Instead of stutterings and hesitations, I saw the deliberate and skillful pacing of perfect comedic timing in his seemingly off-the-cuff remarks. And as for the substance of his speech, I found him profoundly eloquent on at least two occasions: his fervent statements – “we own this country”, and “when somebody does not do the job, we’ve gotta let them go” – certainly ring true. And as for the empty chair? I saw someone with imagination – with vision. We were observing a master showman at work. He is, after all, an entertainer – and an award-winning entertainer, at that. And if, as Shakespeare so famously penned in As You Like It, “All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players…”, then what we saw was a crackerjack tour de force performance in a political theatre. You, Mr. Eastwood, made my day.

Tony O’Donnell was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1994 representing District 29-C. Currently, he is a member of the House Environmental Matters Committee. He and his wife, Lori, and their three children live in Drum Point, Lusby, in Calvert County.
