Clint, We Hardly Knew Yeโฆ
Apparently, there is no end to the criticism Clint Eastwood has endured for remarks made during his address to the Republican National Convention in Tampa earlier this month. Heโs been called โDotty Harryโ and his speech has mockingly been referred to as โRomney, Eastwood and Chairโ โ and those are some of the kinder media comments. His presentation has been ridiculed as rambling and peculiar, and – at the more extreme end of the analysis – as โbizarreโ.
In Mr. Eastwoodโs defense, I must say that I found his delivery to have been brilliant. Instead of stutterings and hesitations, I saw the deliberate and skillful pacing of perfect comedic timing in his seemingly off-the-cuff remarks. And as for the substance of his speech, I found him profoundly eloquent on at least two occasions: his fervent statements – โwe own this countryโ, and โwhen somebody does not do the job, weโve gotta let them goโ – certainly ring true. And as for the empty chair? I saw someone with imagination โ with vision. We were observing a master showman at work. He is, after all, an entertainer – and an award-winning entertainer, at that. And if, as Shakespeare so famously penned inย As You Like It,ย โAll the worldโs a stage, And all the men and women merely playersโฆโ, then what we saw was a crackerjack tour de force performance in aย politicalย theatre. You, Mr. Eastwood, made my day.
