Despite a forecast of possible rain, the Calvert County Fair got off to a dry, pleasant start Wednesday, Sept. 26. The 2012 event got rolling with an early evening ceremony lead by a local NJOTC honor guard, a bagpiper and top puppet Granpa Cratchet. Miss Tranquility Sarah Bryner and Lord Calvert Edward Town and members of their court followed close behind.

Wednesday was Feed the Needy Night and midway rides were at a super low rate.

Thursday, Sept. 27 was Senior Citizens and Handicapped Day, with plenty of entertainment and a free lunch for the special attendees.

The county fair is primarily an agriculture exhibition. Livestock basked in the attention given to them by fairgoers. Due to an outbreak of swine flu, however, the immediate area where hogs were being housed was off limits to fair attendees.

Calvert County Public Schools students are off Friday, Sept. 28 and encouraged to attend the fairโ€™s Youth Day. The fair concludes with Family Day Saturday, Sept. 29 and Fun at the Fair Day Sunday, Sept. 30.

The Calvert County Fair Idol contest is going on throughout the event at the pavilion, with the winner to be announced Saturday.
