La Plata, MD – A two-story, single-family home in Charles County sustained heavy damage in a late afternoon fire Sunday, Nov. 2, state authorities reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze occurred on Bridgette Lane in La Plata and was discovered around 5:42 p.m. by one of the home’s occupants.

“The fire originated in an upstairs bedroom and spread into the attic quickly,” Dfm. Caryn McMahon reported. “Firefighting operations were hampered by the strong wind conditions, causing the home to be significantly damaged. The family has been displaced, and is being assisted by the American Red Cross, family and friends.”

Over 60 volunteer firefighters from La Plata, Bel Alton, Hughesville, Newburg, Benedict, Waldorf, Mechanicsville, Bryans Road and Marbury were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 30 minutes. No injuries were reported. McMahon’s investigation determined the fire was an accident.

Damage to the home, which McMahon said is owned by Kathryn Staples, totaled $300,000.
