Hughesville, MD – An autopsy conducted this morning on the body of a man found at a Charles County motorcycle crash scene yesterday has determined he was not shot, but died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The victim is identified as Robert T. Anderson, 44, of the 22000-block of Conrad Drive, Patuxent River, MD.ย An autopsy at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore today determined Anderson died as a result of multiple blunt force trauma injuries he sustained in the crash.ย The wound observed by the forensic examiner on the scene that appeared to possibly be a gunshot wound was determined to have been caused by a puncture that occurred during the crash.
Maryland state troopers from the La Plata Barrack were dispatched to Rt. 5, north of the bypass at Rt. 231, Hughesville, at about 2:15 p.m. yesterday, for the report of a motor vehicle crash.ย Troopers found a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle that had run off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail.ย The driver, later identified as Anderson, had been ejected from the motorcycle.
Emergency medical services personnel pronounced Anderson dead at the scene.ย A forensic examiner observed a suspicious injury that may have been caused by a gunshot.ย The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to conduct the investigation in the event the autopsy confirmed a homicide.
The autopsy has resulted in Andersonโs death being ruled an accident as a result of the motor vehicle crash.ย Troopers from the La Plata Barrack will continue the traffic crash investigation, with assistance from the Maryland State Police Crash Team.

Hughesville, MD – Maryland State Police uniform troopers and criminal investigators are on the scene of a potential homicide that was first reported as a traffic crash along Rt. 5 in Charles County.
Details are minimal at this time, but the victim is an adult male.ย Troopers are working to make a positive identification and notify family.ย An identification is not expected to be released until tomorrow.
Shortly before 3 ย p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, troopers from the La Plata Barrack were dispatched to what was reported to be a traffic crash along the Hughesville Bypass, on northbound Rt. 5, near Old Leonardtown Road, in Hughesville.ย Troopers found an overturned motorcycle and its operator who had been ejected.ย Evidence indicated the driver had run off the left side of the roadway.
Emergency medical services personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene.ย A forensic examiner responded and during an examination of the victim, found what appeared to be evidence in his clothing and trauma to his body indicative of a gunshot wound.ย The body will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit are continuing the investigation, with assistance from the Criminal Enforcement Division, Forensic Sciences Division, La Plata Barrack troopers, and the Charles County Sheriffโs Office.ย Scene processing is expected to continue through the evening.
Portions of north and southbound Rt. 5 on the bypass in the area of Hughesville will be closed throughout the evening as investigators process the scene and search for evidence.ย State Highway Administration personnel will be assisting with lane closures and detours around the scene.
No information about a potential suspect or suspects is known at this time.ย Anyone who may have witnessed this apparent shooting or was in the area of the Rt. 5 bypass around 3 p.m. today is urged to contact the Maryland State Police at the La Plata Barrack at 301-392-1200.
