A fire Friday morning in a truck parked inside a moving company in Waldorf caused extensive damage to the truck and minimal damage to the building. A smoke alarm was activated at 1.11 a.m. at Worldwide Moving Systems on Rockefeller Court. When firefighters arrived they found the fire that had originated in a 1997 Freightliner truck parked inside.

It took 70 firefighters from Waldorf, La Plata, Bel Alton, Bryans Road, Hughesville, Marbury, Accokeek, Baden and Brandywine volunteer fire departments 10 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Damage is estimated at $55,000 to the truck and its contents and $5,000 to the building. The sprinkler system in place did activate helping to quell the blaze and limit damage to the truck and the area around it.

The causwe of the fire is under investigation, according to Deputy Fire Marshall Caryn McMahon. The truck was owned by Thomas Jones.
