SUNDERLAND, Md. – The Office of the State Fire Marshal has completed an investigation into a house fire that occurred on Easter morning in the 1100 block of Claggett Road, Sunderland.
The homeowner reported the fire at 8:46 a.m. on March 31, 2024. Upon arrival, crews discovered fire showing from the basement to the roof of the one-story home. Firefighters pulled a line to the side of the house into the basement and successfully controlled the fire within 30 minutes.

The fire originated in the dwelling’s basement and spread to the remainder of the residence. The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental, caused by a space heater placed too close to combustibles.
One occupant sustained a minor burn injury but refused medical service. The American Red Cross assisted the family.

The fire caused an estimated loss of $100,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents. A smoke alarm was present in the home and activated during the incident.
Crews operated for a few hours to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
