ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. — A sheet of ice that broke free from a passing vehicle shattered the windshield of an Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office cruiser Wednesday morning, injuring a deputy and underscoring the dangers of winter driving.

The incident occurred Jan. 28, 2026, on Route 97 while the deputy was traveling on patrol. Authorities said a large slab of ice slid off another vehicle and struck the cruiser’s windshield with enough force to cause it to break. Despite the impact, the deputy maintained control of the vehicle and drove safely to the Millersville maintenance shop.

The deputy was later transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Sheriff’s officials used the incident to remind motorists of their responsibility to fully clear snow and ice from their vehicles before entering the roadway. Ice that becomes airborne can pose a serious hazard, damaging vehicles and causing injuries to other drivers.

Authorities said taking a few extra minutes to clear a vehicle can help prevent dangerous situations during winter weather.

  1. They really need to make this a law and with some hefty fines and points. It is dangerous. Stay home if you can’t take a few minutes to clear your vehicle off. I hope it doesn’t take someone getting killed for this to get some attention with the law makers.

  2. I was worried about this and made a conscious decision not to drive behind any cars. This ice is. Virtually impossible to remove from
    The top of the car.

  3. I had to drive into DC today for an appointment and cars that had been cleared off were few and far between. I saw large chunks of ice/snow fly off many vehicles and I tried to keep from getting behind anyone that was still iced over. I just can’t imagine getting into my vehicle and driving when it’s covered with ice/snow. A few vehicles had windshields that were cleaned enough just so the driver could see thru in front. Many rear windows were completely covered.
    What is wrong with people?

    1. I do. His parents. His siblings. His kids. Friends he had growing up. People he played sports with as a kid. His wife. His coworkers, some are cops some are not. Guys he maybe served in the military with and they still have a great bond.
      The list is potentially endless.
