WALDORF, Md. — A Fort Washington man was charged after officers reported finding a stolen Hyundai abandoned in the middle of a Waldorf roadway and later stopped three people matching the suspects’ descriptions nearby.

Charles Albert Williams III, 19, of Fort Washington, was charged with theft from $1,500 to under $25,000 and fraud to avoid prosecution.

The charges stem from an incident reported July 4, 2026, in the area of Western Parkway and Berry Road in Waldorf.

Charging documents state officers with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 10:30 a.m. after receiving a call for three males who had abandoned a red 2016 Hyundai Sonata in the middle of the roadway. The vehicle was bearing Maryland registration and had been reported stolen through the Prince George’s County Police Department earlier that morning.

The three people were described as wearing all black clothing, white tank tops, black book bags, ski masks and carrying masks. Officers later found the stolen vehicle at 3651 Middletown Road in Waldorf.

An officer reported seeing three males matching the description walking together toward LA Fitness at 2916 Festival Way, a shopping center just north across Berry Road from where the stolen vehicle had been abandoned.

Charging documents state Williams and a juvenile male stopped after officers gave commands. A second juvenile male ran from officers but was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.

While Williams was in custody, investigators reported he provided his name and a date of birth that led officers to believe he was a juvenile. Charging documents state officers began the juvenile charging process before a records check showed Williams’ actual date of birth and confirmed he was an adult.

Investigators reported a Maryland identification card photograph was located and used to positively identify Williams.

The stolen Hyundai was valued at $21,750, charging documents state.

Williams was released after posting a $4,000 unsecured personal bond. A hearing is set for Aug. 18, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
