Southern Maryland will be celebrating Independence Day with full force and excitement all through the July 4th weekend. With several events in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s county, a fun filled weekend is certain for this year’s celebrations.

Here is a guide of the events and festivities planned for the weekend:

Calvert County

Fireworks Over the Bay
Location: Chesapeake Beach Waterfront PO Box 400
Date: Friday, July 1
Time: 7-10 p.m.

The Chesapeake Beach Waterfront hosts this free community event. Two barges will launch fireworks from off the waterfront. Come early as parking may be limited, or be prepared to walk.


Solomons Fireworks Display
Location: Solomons Waterfront
Date: Monday, July 4
Time: Fireworks display begins at 9:15 p.m.
Rain Date: TBA

The Solomons Fireworks Display has become a hallmark of Independence Day celebration in Southern Maryland. Admission is free and all are encouraged to come early as parking will become more difficult as showtime approaches. With a number of small events and vendors, there is plenty to do before the fireworks display begins. Fireworks will be shot off from a barge floating off the West side of Solomons.


Charles County

Celebrate Charles! A Fun Filled Fourth!
Location: Regency Furniture Stadium 11765 St Linus Drive, 20602
Date: Monday, July 4
Time: 4:30 -9:30 p.m.

Celebrate Charles! is a fireworks display on the edge of a baseball park. The Maryland Blue Crabs will play against the Somerset Patriots before the fireworks are lit off. Parking and watching from outside the stadium is free, while a $5 wristband is sold for the Family Fun Zone and admission into the stadium and game is handled through www.somdbluecrabs.com. People are encouraged to come early and enjoy the local vendors of Charles County.

Town of Indian Head Independence Day and Fireworks
Location: The Village Green and Pavilion, 100 Walter Thomas Road, Indian Head
Date: Monday, July 4 
Time: 3:30 – 9:10 p.m.

The town celebration kicks off at 3:30 p.m. and will feature amusements park rides, food vendors and live music by DJ Rockin Roger and One Louder Band. The evening will be capped off with fireworks at 9:10 PM. Guests may bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating. The event is free, however tickets will be sold for rides and there is a reduced pricing with proof of residency in Indian Head.


St. Mary’s County

Chesapeake Orchestra at River Concert Series- Fireworks
Location: St. Mary’s College of Maryland 18952 E. Fisher Road 
Date: Friday, July 1 
Time: 7 -10:00 p.m.
The River Concert Series will continue its summer long celebration, with its July 1 presentation of Brass and Blues music. Maestro Jeffrey Silberschlag and the Chesapeake Orchestra will be performing a genre-bending display of bluegrass and blues music with the structure and precision of orchestral instrumentation. The performance will be accompanied by a fireworks display, later in the evening.

Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department Independence Day Celebration

Location: 24801 Three Notch Road, Hollywood
Date: Saturday, July 2 
Time: 5 – 10 p.m.
The Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting their annual Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 2. The event will feature carnival rides and food, starting at 5 p.m. Live music by Robbie Boothe will begin at 6 p.m. The fireworks will conclude the event. Admission is free, though a $5 donation is asked for parking and a $5 armband will be sold for rides.

Country Life Festival
Location: St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds, Leonardtown, Route 5
Date: Friday, July 1 – Sunday, July 3
Time: 4 -9 p.m.
The fireworks display will be held on Saturday, July 2 with the display beginning at 9 p.m. on the fairgrounds. The weekend long event will run from 4 – 9 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday. Aside from the Saturday Firework show, the Festival will be filled with vendors, contests, exhibits and fun. Live music will be playing throughout the event as well. Admission is $10.
