PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Southern Maryland residents are invited to come out for a day of cars, community, and giving back at the Honoring Local Heroes Car Show on Sunday, July 13, at the Calvert County Fairgrounds. The car show runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with music, vendors, and family activities continuing through 5 p.m. The event features custom vehicles, military-support organizations, and activities for all ages — all part of Kennedy Gross’s Girl Scout Gold Award project honoring veterans and active-duty service members.

Proceeds from the car show will support the creation and installation of tribute banners honoring local veterans and active-duty service members. Each banner will feature the honoree’s photo and service details and will be displayed in the community, pending county approval.

Gross, a 2025 graduate of Calvert High School and member of Girl Scout Troop 6333, has been involved in Girl Scouts for 13 years, starting in kindergarten.

“When I was younger, we took a family road trip and saw flag displays honoring local veterans,” Gross said. “I thought that was special. I thought that kind of recognition would be great in my community.”

To turn that inspiration into action, Gross decided a car show would be the best way to bring the community together and support her project.

Gross has previously earned the Bronze Award, Silver Award, and the Silver Trefoil Award, all of which emphasize service, leadership, and lasting community impact. “My Bronze and Silver projects were animal-focused — during COVID, I worked with cat rescues,” she said. “My troop leader, Angie Cox, has done a great job guiding us to find ways to help with topics that matter and that are also fun to us.”

The Gold Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve, requiring at least 80 hours of planning, leadership, and implementation. Gross credits her progress to community collaboration and mentorship. “I have a great advisor, Mr. Mike Evans, who is helping me get the process started and connecting me with the people I need to.”

With the Gold Award marking the capstone of her Girl Scouting journey, Gross reflected on the impact of her experiences. “This is the final award in Girl Scouting. Everything I’ve done up to now—Bronze, Silver, and Silver Trefoil—has helped me grow and learn along the way.”
