SOUTHERN MARYLAND — Girls’ flag football will officially launch as a varsity sport in Charles and Calvert County public high schools this fall, joining a growing movement across Maryland to elevate the emerging sport for female athletes.

While local school systems are free to offer girls’ flag football, it is not yet a state-sponsored sport under the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA). According to Maryland regulations, the MPSSAA cannot officially sanction the sport until at least 40% of its 200 member schools—approximately 80 high schools—sponsor teams at the varsity level. This threshold is outlined under the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR).

Until that benchmark is met, each local school system can decide whether to sponsor girls’ flag football and integrate the sport into their athletics programs. Frederick County was the first school district in Maryland to pilot girls’ flag football in the fall of 2023. This pilot program was launched in partnership with the Baltimore Ravens and Under Armour.
