In 1991 the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department celebrated a very special occasion. The construction of their new fire house had been completed. As most residents in the county are aware, HVFD built a Social Hall on the top level. The hall is rented out for many events; weddings, craft shows, amongst other types of parties. There is one night of the week the hall is not available; since 1992 the members of the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department have been hosting Bingo on Wednesday Nights as a way to raise money to support the Department. Although it may be a HVFD event, we can guarantee it is not a firefighter, nor a ladies auxiliary member that has spent the most Wednesday nights up on the top level of the fire house.
Fast forward to today. Thanks to the loyal citizens, HVFD Bingo has been going strong for 19 years. One citizen in particular will be celebrating a very special day on August 28, 2010. Mary Rosalie Norris will be celebrating her 100th birthday. To honor Mrs. Norris, the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary decided to throw a surprise birthday party for her during Bingo this past Wednesday. County Commissioner Dement presented her with an accommodation. It was a nice little celebration to wish a special lady a very happy birthday on this monumental occasion.
But why all of this during bingo at a fire house one may ask? Since 1992 the fire department has hosted approximately 950 nights of Bingo. Mrs. Norris can count on one hand just how many of those nights she has missed… five.
So once again, on the behalf of the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary, Happy 100th Birthday Mrs. Norris! And thank you for your continuous support throughout the past 19 years. We’ll see you Wednesday Night!!!
