Hollywood, MD – On Friday April 19th Patuxent Habitat for Humanity in partnership with Christmas in April, Calvert County and Exelon Militaries Actively Connected (EMAC) built a ramp for the back door, handrails to enter the home safely at the front door and made the bathroom safer with two handicap accessible bars for Mr. and Mrs. Burdette of Hollywood, MD. The Burdette’s are both Army veterans with disabilities that created a need for these repairs. With funding from a grant from The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, volunteers were able to finish the critical repairs needed to make their home a safer place for these veterans to live. While this is the first of many veteran repairs we have in the queue this year, we always need volunteers and funding to enable continuation of this program. The amazing partnership between these talented groups of volunteers has proven again to be a winning combination to better the lives of deserving local veterans. Everyone deserves the opportunity to age in place with dignity in their own home and community, especially our veterans!
The Patuxent Habitat for Humanity Veteran Critical Repair Program is designed to repair homes for military veterans and their families. The program will assist with repairs identified in Habitat’s Critical Home Repair guidelines that may vary from roof repair and structural wall repairs to installing wheel chair ramps and remodeling bathrooms to be easily used by veterans with disabilities. About Habitat for Humanity International
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity has grown from a grassroots effort that began on a community farm in southern Georgia in 1976 to a global nonprofit housing organization in nearly 1,400 communities across the U.S. and in over 70 countries. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
