STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Mega-store and gas station Buc-ee’s is coming to Stafford County, Virginia, cutting a full hour off the drive to the nearest store for most of its Maryland fan base.

The project was approved after a public hearing on May 19, marked by heated debate and some excited fans.

Proponents of the project said that the store will bring in more tourism dollars to the county and will be a welcome addition for locals who love the food. Those in opposition expressed concern that Stafford County would become a “pit-stop state.” The measure passed 5-2.

There’s no timeline yet on when the Buc-ee’s in Stafford County will open, but it will likely take several years. Once built, it will cut the drive time down significantly for anyone who loves this store. Currently, the nearest Buc-ee’s to Southern Maryland is the location in Mount Crawford, Virginia, which is approximately a 2 1/2-hour drive from Southern Maryland towns like Waldorf and Prince Frederick, and more than three hours if you live in Leonardtown. That means that most people in Maryland either have to dedicate a day trip to the store or just have to wait until they’re passing one on a road trip.

Once the location is up and running in Stafford County, Waldorf and Prince Frederick residents can get there in about 90 minutes.

Buc-ee’s is a Texas-based gas station chain that’s amassed a cult following nationwide. The chain is dedicated to providing clean restrooms, good food and cheap gas in its mission to elevate the whole “we have to stop for gas” experience. If you’ve ever been in a Buc-ee’s, you also know you can find everything from Buc-ee’s-branded teaspoon sets to swimsuits and throw pillows. People all over the country are proudly sporting their Buc-ee’s gear, including here in Maryland.
