HUNTINGTOWN, Md. — A love for the outdoors is turning into something much bigger for one Southern Maryland child.
Local Huntingtown kindergartener Grant C. is quickly gaining traction in the 2026 Ranger Rick Magazine Contest, where young nature enthusiasts across the country compete for a chance to spotlight their passion for wildlife and conservation.
Described as “an outdoorsman at heart,” Grant is rarely found sitting still.
“He’s active and inquisitive, and loves to climb, explore, fish, and play with all the creatures he finds,” his family shared in an interview with The BayNet. “Even rocks are exciting!”
Growing up near the Chesapeake Bay has helped shape that curiosity. Grant has developed a strong interest in marine life, with a particular fascination for sharks, as he continues to explore the waterways and ecosystems that define Southern Maryland.
More Than A Contest: A Mission Rooted In Conservation
While the competition offers a significant prize, including $20,000, a wildlife experience with expert Jeff Corwin, and a feature in Ranger Rick Magazine — for Grant, it’s about more than winning.
His family points to growing environmental concerns close to home as a driving force behind his participation.
“With environmental concerns facing Southern Maryland this year, like the sewage leak in the Potomac, potential data center construction in Lusby, and the bull sharks at Herrington Harbor, this is an excellent time for local children to learn more about environmental conservation,” they said.

They added that understanding how environmental efforts impact communities from local waterways to global policy is something Grant is already beginning to grasp.
“Even world politics affect what happens in our backyard, so Grant is ready to equip himself with the tools to be an environmental steward.”
A Natural Connection To The Outdoors
Grant’s passion didn’t develop overnight. It’s been part of his life from the very beginning.
“Since he could sit up, Grant has enjoyed what he called his ‘ride’ (small four-wheeler), his grandparents’ Gator and tractor, exploring the woods, berry picking with his Maw, playing in creeks with his cousins, fishing on the Pax and Potomac rivers, and climbing wherever he goes,” his family said.

That hands-on connection to nature continues to grow alongside his curiosity.
“He’s constantly asking riveting questions about wildlife, learning to read through books about our natural world, and finding a reason to get outside! Grant has an adventurous spirit.”
Looking Ahead: Big Dreams For A Small Environmental Advocate
Advancing in the competition would not only bring Grant closer to the grand prize but also open doors for learning and growth.
“Not only would Grant get closer to the grand prize if he advances to the next round in the competition, but he will continue to build confidence, hone advocacy skills, learn about wildlife conservation through interaction with Ranger Rick, and proudly represent this region,” his family shared.

If he ultimately wins, Grant already has plans to give back.
“If he wins the $20k grand prize, he hopes to use some of the funds to establish a survival skills course for children in Southern Maryland that could be offered in a summer camp format.”
Beyond personal goals, his journey is already shining a light on something bigger.
“Winning will help Grant bring attention to the needs of the Southern Maryland ecosystem and the children who live here.”
How The Community Can Help
