Patrick O. Chew

Prince Frederick, MD – A seven-count indictment was handed down last month charging a Calvert County man with robbery and assault. The accused, Patrick Oโ€™Brien Chew, 50 of Prince Frederick, has, according to court documents, a history of violent behavior.

On Dec. 21, the indictment issued by Calvert County Circuit Court charged Chew with one count of robbery, one count of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, and one count each of theft less than $1,000, illegal possession of ammunition and driving/attempting to drive a motor vehicle without a license.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred the morning of Nov. 5 outside an apartment on River Reach Court in Prince Frederick. The individuals Chew allegedly accosted were his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend, court documents stated.

The female victim told the investigating officer, Trooper Megelick of the Maryland State Police (MSP) โ€œshe received a text message from Chewโ€ shortly after leaving her boyfriendโ€™s home to go to another friendโ€™s home. According to court documents, the message sent to the woman read โ€œI see you.โ€ When he subsequently confronted the female victim in a stairwell at the apartment complex, Chew is alleged to have told her โ€œI told you not to come in my hood.โ€ Shortly after saying that Chew โ€œgrabbed her by the head using both hands and threw her to the ground,โ€ Megelick stated in court documents. Chew walked away but returned a short time later and picked up the victimโ€™s cell phone which fell out of her possession during the assault. The woman was not seriously injured.

A resident of another apartment heard the commotion, saw Chew leaving and notified police. A verbal argument subsequently ensued in an adjacent parking lot between Chew and the male victim. During the confrontation Chew brandished a black pistol and told the male victim โ€œyou donโ€™t want this, I will bust a cap in you.โ€ Shortly after that Chew left the scene.

Police later obtained a warrant to search Chewโ€™s home but failed to locate any firearms or the missing cell phone.

In September 2013, Chew pled guilty to second-degree assault related to an incident involving the female victim of the November 2015 incident. After being incarcerated for nearly 50 days, Chew sent a hand-written letter to District Court Judge Robert Riddle requesting clemency. โ€œI am sorry for the mental and physical abuse,โ€ Chew told Riddle. โ€œIt was the drugs and alcohol that made me that way.โ€
Chew told Riddle he was enrolled in anger management class. โ€œI am begging the courts to relieve me of my backup time of four years and help me pay for my classes that I need,โ€ he wrote.

On Feb. 4 a hearing on violation of probation charges against Chew will be held in District Court. Prior to thatโ€”on Feb. 1โ€”a pretrial hearing regarding the November incident is tentatively scheduled in Circuit Court.
