SOUTHERN MARYLAND — Maryland’s strawberry season runs approximately from early May to early June each year, though this year the fields are open in late April. Luckily, Southern Maryland has plenty of great locations where you can pick enough strawberries to snack, preserve and bake to your heart’s desire.

The “u-pick” season is a great time to explore Maryland’s beautiful farms and support local businesses. And strawberries aren’t the only fruit available during the spring and summer — at many of the farms we included below, you can find options for blueberries, blackberries and raspberries, depending on the farm and what’s in season. Each of the fruits has different picking seasons, so make sure to check before you go.

Also, remember that this is a popular activity! Don’t wait to go and miss out on the best strawberries.

Here’s where you can pick strawberries this year:

Swann Farms

Swann Farms is in Calvert County, located at 7740 Swan Lane in Owings. Swann Farms posted on Facebook on April 29 that the strawberry season is officially underway. They’re open daily for u-pick strawberries from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and recommend that the public check their website and social media for daily weather updates about the field conditions.

If you don’t want to pick your berries yourself, Swann Farms also have pre-picked baskets for sale, as well as hanging baskets, local honey and fresh-cut asparagus.

Schlagel Farms

Schlagel Farms, located at 12850 Schlagel Road in Waldorf, is open for picking and the farm says conditions are “amazing.” The farm is open for u-pick daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Wednesday until 7 p.m. U-pick is open rain or shine, but the farm suggests checking their Facebook for field conditions before you visit.

Seasonal produce, farm-raised meats, eggs and local honey are available in their farm store, and the ice cream trailer is open Saturday and Sunday.

Lyon Family Farms

Lyon Family Farms, located at 39010 Lyon Lane in Mechanicsville, opened their u-pick strawberry season this week. They’re open daily, but times vary each day: Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Quart picking containers are provided, and buckets are available for purchase.

They will also have pre-picked strawberries for sale every day except for Sunday.

Miller Farms

Located at 10499 Tippett Rd., Clinton, Miller Farms is open for strawberry picking daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The farm also hosts a strawberry festival on Saturdays and Sundays throughout May, which is a ticketed event. Picking hours on weekends are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Containers are provided on weekends for ticket holders.

Additionally, the farm operates a produce stand and bakery daily on-site.
