David Meints of Lusby holds a beagle that he had just adopted during National Dog Day at the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville.
Hughesville, MD — The dogs had their day Aug. 26 at the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville. For the Dog Days of Summer and in honor of National Dog Day the regional shelter waived the adoption fees for dogs. The day came on the heels of the highly successful Clear the Shelter event Saturday Aug. 22 which saw the largest number of adoptions in one day in the shelterโs history โ 67 dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.
According to Shelter Attendant Tiffany Ogg, the shelter normally opens at 10 on Saturdays but the line started forming at 8 a.m. for the Clear the Shelter event. The line went all the way out the driveway leading up to the shelter.
The National Dog Day event, which was held from noon to 5 p.m. was also busy. One example of those visiting the shelter was David Meints of Lusby, who adopted a stray female young-adult beagle as a companion for his other dog.
All animals adopted at the shelter are spayed or neutered first and the adopter picks up their new companion at a participating vet close to their home. Adoptions can also be contingent on s stray being reclaimed by their owner prior to the holding period expiring.
Tri-County Animal Shelter is located at 6707 Animal Shelter Road in Hughesville. It is operated by Charles County with funding from all three Southern Maryland counties. Strays picked up in each county are delivered to the shelter.
Adoption hours are Monday-Friday, noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To view animals available for adoption visit the shelter website http://www.charlescountymd.gov/es/animalshelter/tri-county-animal-shelter or go to www.petfinder.com
