La Plata, MD – Another in the growing number of heroin-related cases appeared in Charles County Circuit Court Tuesday, Jan. 12 when Darryn Paul Alley, 22 of Waldorf, was brought before Judge Helen I. Harrington on a violation of probation charge.

Alleyโ€™s agent from the Department of Parole and Probation noted that he failed to attend meetings and tested positive on five separate occasions from February to June of last year.

โ€œLast month he tested negative for opiates,โ€ Charles County Assistant Stateโ€™s Attorney Jeremy Widder told Harrington. โ€œHe has a bed up north. Intake said it would be ready at 2 p.m. I would suggest postponing his sentencing to get him in the Mountain Manor program [in Baltimore].โ€

โ€œEveryone recognizes he has a heroin problem,โ€ Charles County Assistant Public Defender Elizabeth Connell said.

โ€œIโ€™ll postpone sentencing, but he has to go to the Mountain Manor inpatient facility,โ€ Harrington stressed.

โ€œI recognize I have a problem,โ€ Alley told Harrington. โ€œIโ€™m willing to do whatever it is to get off it. I canโ€™t do it by myself,โ€ he admitted.

โ€œIt is a terrible addiction,โ€ the judge responded. โ€œI donโ€™t have any magic trick. You simply have to do the hard work. Iโ€™m sorry, there are no short cuts.โ€

Harrington set sentencing for March 8 and said what happens from there depends on how he does in treatment.
