Karen was a lifelong learner and a passionate educator. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1996, a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 2006, and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 2009. Karen proudly dedicated 18 years of her career to teaching with Calvert County Public Schools, where she made a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues. In 2024, she achieved National Board Certification, a milestone that reflected her deep commitment to education and her craft. Teaching was truly her passion, and it was with great reluctance that she retired on disability in 2024.
After being diagnosed with ALS in 2023, Karen made the intentional choice to live life fully and unapologetically. She embraced every moment, often spending time at the dock bar with family and friends, enjoying live music, laughter, and good drinks—creating memories that will be treasured forever. Karen was full of life and deeply loved. She was exceptionally kind, endlessly funny, and known for living life to the fullest.
Karen is survived by her loving husband, Griff Drew; her children, Megan (35), Alex (28), Danielle (26), and Juliet (19); her cherished grandsons, Ayden (5) and Grayson (1); her mother, Meg and father Ed; her sisters, Laura and Peggy; her brother, Michael; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of Karen’s life will be held at No Thyme to Cook in Solomons, MD on March 15th at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the ALS Association.
