LA PLATA, Md. — The La Plata High School varsity boys cross country team brought home pride for Southern Maryland this month with a standout performance at the 51st Paul Short Run, presented by ASICS, hosted by Lehigh University on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2025.

The Warriors joined more than 350 runners from 41 schools across the East Coast for one of the largest and most competitive high school races in the nation — and held their own. La Plata placed 22nd overall, showing poise and teamwork against some of the region’s top programs.

Junior Lucas Alarie led the charge with a 13th-place finish out of more than 350 runners, clocking a time of 16:16.6. Close behind, junior Trevor Thompson turned in a personal-best 16:30.1 to finish 22nd overall. Rounding out the team’s strong force were Zackary Mayo (150th, 18:20.3), Matthew Schick (180th, 18:38.4), Adin Walters (224th, 19:11.1), Zachary Cottle (234th, 19:19.6) and David Mason (273rd, 19:45.5).

Parents credited Coach Blaine and Coach Nicholl for their steady leadership and commitment to the team, saying their guidance goes beyond training runs and race days. They’ve played a big part in teaching the athletes discipline, teamwork and confidence — lessons that carry well beyond the course.

Beyond the race results, the experience offered a glimpse into college competition. The athletes spent time touring Lehigh’s campus, meeting with college coaches and connecting with NCAA runners — a chance one team parent described as “both inspiring and motivating for every one of them.”

According to Lehigh University Athletics, the 2025 meet continued its expanded two-day format, with high school races on Oct. 2 and collegiate events on Oct. 3.
