ANNAPOLIS, Md. — It’s not too late for local photographers to enter the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) annual photo contest.
The DNR photo contest asks photographers to submit their most beautiful photographs of the state’s flora and fauna. Winners will receive prize money and have the opportunity to be featured on the 2027 DNR calendar. In addition to the calendar, DNR is looking for more photos to be featured on its hard cards.
DNR will choose multiple winners for this contest. The photos are organized by season, with first-, second-, and third-place winners for each seasonal category. A grand prize winner is selected from that group. In addition to the seasonal winners, DNR has subcategories within the seasons:
- Birds
- Insects
- Flora
- Recreation
- Landscapes
- Weather and Wonder
- Wildlife
Plus, photographers may be entered to participate in the “Fan Favorite,” selected by popular vote on Facebook. The photo with the most “likes” will be printed in the calendar and will receive a Maryland State Park Passport and free calendars.
All that means that local photographers have nine opportunities to win prizes during the contest. The grand prize winner will receive $700, a one-year Maryland State Park Passport, and five copies of the 2027 calendar with their winning image on the cover.
Last year’s grand prize winner was a photo of a river otter taken by Christopher Michael. You can view all the winners here.
The contest is open until Aug. 1. Photographers can submit their photos online and see the complete rules and requirements for the contest.
