With the presidential election looming only three short weeks away, Nov. 4 may be one of the most important elections Americans have had to decide in the history of the United States. As the election draws near, the conflict continues in the Middle East and the economy is on a seemingly never-ending roller-coaster ride through turmoil.

Voters are being asked to choose between two very divergent candidates. Americans must elect the one person, who they feel can best right the country’s ship and return to the U.S. a functioning economy and guarantee security for its people.

However, for those Maryland citizens wishing to take part in the election, Tuesday, Oct. 14 is the last day to register to vote. Absentee ballots may be requested until Oct. 28.

Both Democrats and Republicans have made every effort to swell the ranks of registered voters. According to Justin Ready, Executive Director of Maryland’s Republican Party, “We have dedicated volunteers who show up at most events to encourage people to register throughout the year.”

Recently Sen. Mikulski went on a voter registration swing through Maryland with State Sen. Cardin. Both parties stated that there is a very heavy interest in this election.

Residents must meet eligibility requirements to register to vote: Be a resident in the county in which they choose to vote, be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age on or before the election, not have been convicted of buying or selling votes, not be under guardianship for mental disability and not be convicted of any felony.

Convicted felons must satisfy at least one of two requirements before they may register to vote. They must have either been pardoned, or have completed the court ordered sentence imposed including parole and probation.

Residents may apply to become a registered voter at a local election board office or at the state election board office. Voters may also register at any site administered by a local election board and at drivers’ license or at the motor vehicle administration offices. Those who registered earlier were also able to mail in their application. However, at this late date, only a visit to a registration site will allow voters to register in time.
