Ravens Dominant in Pre Season Opener!!!
ย
Hello Sports Fans, Iโm Buddy Long. And this is the Friday August 9th edition of Southern Maryland Sports.
ย
Baltimore Ravens:
The defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens began defense of their 2013 title in strong fashion on a night where head coach John Harbaugh got major contributions from everyone on the team. Rushing touchdowns by Bernard Pierce and Anthony Allen, combined with a blocked punt in the end zone recovered by former Maryland star LaQuan Williams helped propel the defending champs to a convincing 44-16 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Reserve Quarterback Tyrod Taylor, the former Virginia Tech product, went 13-23 for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns in the dominating effort. And to top it off, Justin Tucker booted a 58 yard field goal to finish off a game that was over long before the 4th quarter. The Ravens return to the training camp confines of Owings Mills, Maryland in preparation for their first home pre season game next Thursday against Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons.
ย
Washington Redskins:
For the Washington Redskins, the game was a little tighter. Reserve Quarterback Pat White scampered 9 yards into the end zone late in the fourth quarter to bring the Redskins within 1 point of the Tennessee Titans. White followed his touchdown effort with a desperation toss in to the end zone to Emanuel Oboyehe, giving the Redskins a 1 point edge, and the eventual victory in Pre Season Game #1.
ย
Kirk Cousins, starting at quarterback for the Redskins, went 6-7, including an early touchdown pass to tight end Fred Davis. Rex Grossman joined the quarterback trio, getting a touchdown completion to Leonard Hankerson late in the 2nd quarter. The offense was also encouraged by the performance of Roy Helu Jr as the injured running back from 1 season ago had 13 rushes for 57 yards.
ย
The team played the first pre season game minus Robert Griffin III, Alfred Morris, Pierre Garcon, as well as secondary defenders DeAngelo Hall and Brandon Meriweather, all resting while most recovered from injuries from last season or in camp, with the exception of Morris.
ย
The Skins will next play the Pittsburgh Steelers at Fed Ex Field Monday Night August 19.
ย
Baltimore Orioles:
The Baltimore Orioles had the day off, making the short trip from San Diego to San Francisco for a weekend series with the Giants. The Oโs are currently enjoying a 2 game winning streak during this 8 game trip that will wrap up early next week in Arizona.
ย
Washington Nationals:
Thursday was also an off day for the Washington Nationals, hoping to get back on a winning streak, and fast. The Nats, currently Fifteen and a half games behind Atlanta in the NL East, play host to the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend.ย
