State and local authorities are investigating a spate of mailbox fires that occurred early Saturday morning, Oct. 12 on Old Leonardtown Road in Hughesville. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, three mailboxes and one plastic paper box were damaged by the fires, which investigators determined were deliberately set. The destruction was discovered by a passing motorist around 1 a.m. No injuries were reported.
“The fires were determined to be incendiary from suspects igniting combustible papers inside the mailboxes,” stated Dfm. John Nelson. The damage to the boxes is estimated at $100.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
