A woman was serious injured early Saturday when she was struck in the back by an arrow while walking on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park shortly after 5 a.m.
Lt. Rick Burris, Bureau of Criminal Investigations Commander, told The Bay Net that detectives arrested Luis R. Fuentes, 43, shortly after the incident.
The victim, 22, Natasha M. Kelly, sustained a serious injury, but was not expected to be life-threatening. She was flown from the scene by Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 2 to PG County Hospital.
Lt. Burris said Kelly was wearing a large coat that helped prevent a more serious injury.
While investigation near the scene, St. Mary’s Sheriff’s patrol officers encountered the suspect in the vicinity. After questioning, he was detained and interviewed by BCI detectives.
Lt. Burris said detectives attained a search warrant for Fuentes’ residence nearby and recovered evidence that links him to the assault.
The victim and suspect did know each other, Burris said, but the extent of their relationship was not immediately known by police.
Fuentes was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, a felony.
The St. Mary’s State’s Attorney’s Office will be reviewing the case to determine if further charges are warranted, Lt. Burris said.
