On October 23, 2013, deputies responded to a residence on Shady Mile Drive in California, Maryland, for a suspicious person complaint.

Deputies located suspect Christopher Lee Cotsford, 31, of no fixed address, on the complainantโ€™s property intoxicated. Cotsford was told to leave the property, which he did heading toward Three Notch Road.

Meanwhile, the complainant believed Cotsford may have been squatting in a shed on the property of a nearby foreclosed home and requested deputies check the area. While checking the area, Cotsford returned to the scene and stole a marked Sheriffโ€™s Office patrol vehicle. The vehicle was tracked and located in the area of Old Rolling Road a short time later.

Cotsford was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Maryโ€™s County Detention Center by Deputy Potter. He was charged with Theft Motor Vehicle, Theft $1,000.00 – $10,000.00, Rouge and Vagabond, Malicious Destruction of Property Over $1,000.00, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Malicious Destruction of Property Under $1,000.00, Driving While Intoxicated, and Driving While Suspended.ย ย
